Types of PassiveIncome That Can Be Generated

Online, And What To Expect - Part 1

www.oldyorkcellars.com

Welcome tothe 15th Session of theSmartPassiveIncome Podcast!

Thanks for listening in today. I’ve got a lot more awesome sessions of the podcast I can’t wait

to share with you - an interview with a highly successful entrepreneur and author who retired in

his early 30s who preaches passive income as well, so I’m really excited about that, and then

I’ve got something cool planned where in one session I have maybe 6 or 7 interviews, all in one

episode, with a bunch of people who are finding success online with their own businesses that

have nothing to do with talking about or teaching making money online.

I’m stoked about that one because I really want to show you that you don’t need to talk about

making money online in order to make money online. A lot of people assume this is the case,

because those are the people who are the most public about it, and I’ll admit I’m one of those

people who is now making money from from SPI (which wasn’t initially the intention), but - like

when I got started in this business, it wasn’t with a make money online business, it was with

green exam academy.

If you think you’re going to make money online by talking about making money online, you

better have experience in the industry already because you’re going to be just rehashing other

people’s information and get lost in the crowd. How I got popular in this niche was by using

examples from my own experiences outside of the make money online niche. Just something

for you to think about.

Sorry - getting a little off tangent here. So, stay tuned for those sessions in the future.

TODAY, we’re talking about the different types of passive income made online and what to

expect from each of them. When I say “what to expect”, I mean the costs that are involved, how

long till you might see some results, and how one could get started if that’s a passive income

model you’re interested in. Plus, I’ll try to throw in some tips from my experience to help you get

some results.

I actually had to re-record this intro because as I was recording I realized that I had way too

much to say - that it was going to be a very very long episode if I didn’t break it down into parts,

so you’ll hear a few of the different types of passive income streams today, and the rest in the

next session as well. It’s just hard for me to stop talking about all of this stuff - I get so excited

about it and want to share as much information as possible. I guess that’s a good thing though.

This is the session I probably should have done in the beginning because this will be a good

starting point for those of you looking to do business online and are a little confused on where

to get started, and those of you who already have existing blogs and websites online but aren’t

really seeing the results you were expecting.

You might be listening to this in the future because you emailed me asking me where to start

and this is what I told you to listen to. If so - cool! Thanks for actually taking the initiative and I

hope this helps you.

So before I get started, I’m going to go back to something I talked about in session 1, and that’s

my actual definition of passive income, because I think a lot of people assume what it is and

have their own expectations with it and I just want to re-clarify for the purposes of this session

because passive income models are exactly what we’re talking about.

So, passive income is: income generated without having to trade time for dollars. Meaning, if

passive income businesses were setup properly, they’d be somewhat automated so that if I

stopped working, I could still earn money - which happens. I just got back from a Staycation

here in San Diego - my wife and I celebrated our 2nd year wedding anniversary and spent

a night at the Hard Rock Hotel here in SD (yes, we are from SD, and that’s why they call it a

staycation). Well anyways, when I got back home today, I checked my email and saw that I

had earned more money than I had spent for the entire weekend, which was awesome! The

businesses that I have setup for me continually earn an income without me having to be there.

Now - passive income is hardly every % hands off. That’s the part I think that confuses

people. There is some sort of upkeep or maintenance involved after setting up your businesses

(generally speaking), but it’s very minimal. How much time that is depends on your business

models or how many businesses you have setup, and also how efficient you are, but take for

example my site at www.oldyorkcellars.com I typically spend a few hours each month - 5

minutes, here and 5 minutes there, answering a customer’s email, or checking analytics and

setting up new pages that I test out for optimization purposes. Just a few hours a month total,

but it earns about 4 to 8 thousand dollars a month from products I’ve created and some affiliate

offers. My security guard training website, which most of you know about from the Niche Site

Duel at www.oldyorkcellars.com, currently makes about to a month, but I’m spending time

on it now to increase that income even more. I could let it be but I know there’s a lot more to be

made from that site so I keep going with it.

There are, however, some totally hands off passive income streams I’ll talk about more later in

this session.

So - to sum it up, generating a passive income is the ability to make money without having to

trade your time for money, or, the ability to continue earning an income even when work has

been ended or discontinued.

There are about 10 different models I’ll be talking about to help you get started. Everyone is

going to have a different preference for what model interests them most, so don’t worry if one

or many of these don’t fit the bill for you - really all you need is just one to hold on to, really

focus on and be dedicated to, because that’s what it takes, and after you get to a point where

you’re either generating a passive income already, or you find you have some more time or

energy to dedicate to another one, you can try something else and diversify your passive

income opportunities, which something I’m really in favor of. I’ve hand a hand in most of these

models that I’ll be talking about, and I’ll give you examples from my own experiences as much

as possible.

So - here’s the first one:

Article Writing for Revenue Sharing Sites

I know some of you will be surprised by this, but when people ask me - “Pat, what’s the fastest

and best way to make money online right now.”, I usually refer them to article writing for

revenue sharing sites. Really though, I hate that question because it’s a very hard one to

answer. Immediately, I can tell that the most important thing on that person’s mind is the money,

and it shouldn’t be like that. It should be about trying to change people’s lives - getting in front of

people and affecting the most people as possible, making the internet a better place, and as a

result the money will come. So, when people say “I want to make money now”, it’s hard for me

to answer. But, of course - that’s what we all want and like I said I usually refer people to article

writing.

How this works is you go to a site such as www.oldyorkcellars.com, (I used to refer people to eHow but

they’ve recently shut down their writer’s compensation program) and you write an article. The

site automatically scatters advertisements onto your article when it’s published, and everytime

someone clicks those ads you get a share of that income.

The reason I recommend this, especially for beginners, is that you can get started NOW, it’s

relatively easy to understand and there’s very little setup involved. You can write an article

and because it’s published on an established site with lots of authority in Google, you have

a relatively much easier time getting your articles ranked and then obtaining traffic from the

search engines, and then getting clicks on your ads, as opposed to starting a blog and writing

the same content there. Also, for the beginner, it’s a great way to learn about things like

keyword research, search engine optimization and writing content, which are three things that

are important for a lot of other types of income generation online - so you can learn with article

writing, and then branch off with the basic knowledge that you’ve obtained and do things like

affiliate marketing, niche sites or blogging (which I’ll get to in a sec.).

Furthermore, you see results much fast. Now - the results won’t be CRAZY. You’re not going to

make thousands of dollars overnight, but if you do it right you can see little streams of income

trickle in and I remember when I made my first few dollars online, how awesome that was. I was

using Adsense on my very first site and to see $ here, $ a few hours later, and then

a couple of dollars by the end of the day - it’s really encouraging and really got me fired about

about all of these other income streams I’m involved with.

Realistically speaking, if you say - write 1 article a day for 30 days, you could potentially earn

between $ and $50 a month within the first couple of months, and then later down the road

if you write more and your articles start to climb higher and higher you’ll earn more!

I wrote articles in a single month - this was December of and if you go back into my

archives you’ll see I was writing a lot about this “experiment”. I was going to write articles

in one month and just let it be and see what happens. To this day - it’s now February of ,

I’ve been earning an income each and every month and I haven’t put an OUNCE of extra work

in beyond December of This is, like I was saying earlier, one of the truly passive income

streams out there because there is no upkeep or maintenance involved.

Last month, I earned $ - my most profitable month ever from these articles and not

only is it good passive income, but it’s passive income that is growing. Last month I was at

$ Again, this is why I recommend this for absolute beginners. There are, however, people

making over $ a month from article sites, including infobarrel - and like with anything else

these are the people that are really putting hard and smart work intothe content they publish.

To get started, go to www.oldyorkcellars.com If you want to go through my referral link go to

www.oldyorkcellars.com and register for an account. There are a lot of other sites similar to

infobarrel (eHow, like I said, doesn’t have their writer’s compensation program anymore. They

have another program now for demand media which isn’t nearly as good), such as associated

content, bukisa, helium, just to name a few, but I like Infobarrel because they have the best

terms for their authors, a supportive staff willing to work with the authors to improve the site, a

great supportive community as well, and the most potential, in my opinion.

Before you just write about any ol’ content, you know, like what you did yesterday - you’ll want

to understand that in order to make the most money, you’ve got to write articles that contain

information people are looking for - specifically writing about terms people are typing into

Google. You want to give yourself the most potential to rank on the first page of Google for

those topics and keywords, which means picking topics that are being searched for, but aren’t

too competitive already either.

I could spend an entire day talking about keyword research and how to do it. My best

advice is to check out my keyword research webinar, which you can find at http://

www.oldyorkcellars.com - it’s free and it’ll walk you through the steps on how to find

those golden keywords that you can rank for. Again, this webinar isn’t just for article writing, it’s

for everything that you do online that’ll relate to search engines, so this is a good lesson to start

with if you plan on getting into affiliate marketing, niche sites or blogging in the future as well. So

that’s www.oldyorkcellars.com

So, you find a topic that way - write about it, making sure to put that keyword intothe title of your

article, as well as throughout the body of your article as well. (Especially in the first sentence).

Also, there’s a way to add images and media to your article as well, and it’s best to use pictures

and/or videos that also have the keyword in there, preferably in the file name (for videos it would

be the title of the video from YouTube, for example). You want all of these things to match your

keyword because it’ll show your article’s relevance to that term and help you rank higher in

Google.

After you publish the post, your work isn’t over, and this is where a lot of people mess up or

don’t give themselves the real chance to actually make some good money here. You have

to do things like social bookmarking, which means signing up for sites like stumbleupon,

delicious reddit, etc. or finding someone on those sites and other bookmarking sites to

bookmark your article. Also, you could even do some backlinking strategies that a lot of

do with affiliate marketing and niche sites for search engine rankings. That means finding

other sites online that will link back to your article which is another way the Google finds

your site relevant to a specific topic and ranks you higher for those terms. I won’t get into

detail about specific backlinking strategies here, but you can read my article at http://

www.thewww.oldyorkcellars.com to read more about that. Just so you know, that’s the

most popular post on SPI - over comments and counting, so it’s a good one. Again check it

out at http://www.thewww.oldyorkcellars.com

Affiliate Marketing

Another passive income opportunity is called affiliate marketing.

Affiliate marketing is making money from a commission that you earn by selling other people’s

products.

The absolute best part about affiliate marketing is that most of the time, 99% of the work

has already been done for you. The product has already been created, all the websites and

checkout processes and delivery of the product and dealing with the customer - it’s all done by

the person or company selling the product. All you have to do is get people to click on a link

which has a special code attached to it that signifies that it’s from you, and then they are taken

tothe product’s site. If the person buys it, you earn a commission.

Probably the most basic example I can think of is Amazon’s affiliate program/ After you sign

up to become an Amazon Associate (that’s their fancy name for an affiliate), you basically can

choose any product on the site, or any page on www.oldyorkcellars.com and generate a special link for it.

Anytime someone clicks on that link and makes a purchase, you get paid.

Now - if this is the first time you’re hearing about this, it’s probably going to open up a whole

new world for you - like it did for me the first time I heard about it. Oh, just get people to click on

a link and I can make money if they make a purchase - how simple is that!

Well, it sounds simple, and the concept is simple (and there are a TON of programs and

courses and eBooks and products you can buy that make it sound so simple), but - as I’m sure

more of the experienced internet marketers listening to this well tell you, it’s not an easy button.

There’s a LOT to it, which I’ll briefly cover here.

My first experience with affiliate marketing was a complete failure. Back when I first heard about

it, which was - oh I don’t even remember how long ago that was but it was when I first started

to join mastermind groups (which was where I heard the term and explored it), so it must have

been right around the same time I started the smart passive income blog

Anyways, I had heard about some products that people were affiliates for - these were internet

marketing products which had a $77 pricetag, and a 50% commission. 50% is pretty normal in

the internet marketing industry. It varies from industry to industry but 50% on a price like this is

pretty standard. You might be thinking, “Dang, that’s a lot - 50%. Why would I just give away

$ on my $77 product like that?” - well, to answer THAT question, it’s because that would

be $ that you probably wouldn’t have earned in the first place, because it’s your team of

affiliates that help spread the word about you or your product and help you reach customers

who you would never have reached otherwise. And $ is a decent chunk of change. I

mean, there are $10 eBooks out there that offer a 75% commission, but that’s only $ and

it’s not really worth the effort, for some, to promote it. And in case you were wondering what’s

the point of having affiliates on a $10 product anyways, it’s probably used as more of a tactic to

build a list or ge more of an audience, not to make a huge amount of money. There’s probably

some higher ticket items within that eBook that are promoted - and that way the affiliates only

take 75% on the front end, cheaper eBook, not the - $ course that the eBook promotes, for

example.

Ok, again - getting a little off topic here. Sorry - I just get really excited talking about these type

of marketing strategies, hehe.

So - going back to that $77 product. What I did was I signed up for a Google Adwords account

- Google Adwords is where you can create advertisements (the ones that you see on the side

of the page when you search for terms in Google that are highlighted - sometimes they’re at the

top too). You basically pay a certain amount every time someone clicks on the ad (This is what

they call PPC, or “pay-per-click”). So, if my bid for a keyword (you bid on the keywords that you

want your ad to show up on) - if I was set at a price at per click, and 4 people clicked on

my ad, I would owe Google $ So, the idea is spend a little bit to get people to click on the

ads, and make money from those people who click and then purchase the product. I linked to

my affiliate link in Adwords, which I thought was smart and pretty sneaky - bid on a few relevant

keywords and set up a daily budget of about $

The keywords I was trying to get ads for were really competitive, so each click ended up costing

about $ This was fine, I thought, because if I make about $34 in commission from each

sale, all I would need would be 1 sale for every 17 clicks and I’d be even. And I was pretty

confident I could get more than that.

Well, after I set it and let it be, I ran out of money because I was getting a lot of clicks, and I

hadn’t made one single sale.

I spent a few more hundred dollars on other keywords, and tried different products and nothing

was really working for me. I know a lot of people find success with PPC affiliate marketing,

but it just wasn’t for me. The thing about PPC Affiliate Marketing is that it’s a lot of behind the

scenes work - I mean it’s all “working the system” and there’s just so much to it - like not only

the product that you promote but how you promote it using Adwords, so the copy of your ad

matters, the page that your ad lands on matters (I later found out that putting the affiliate into my

ad directly wasn’t the best thing to do, and I’m not even sure they let you do this anymore - it’s

better to link to a landing page or some other page that then includes your affiliate link).

Some people make a killing using the PPC strategy, but it’s really just not for me. It takes money

to make money here, and it’s all about trading nickles for quarters, if that makes sense. You

definitely have to love numbers in order to make it work, and even then (because I know I love

numbers), it’s very difficult to get into a good groove. But, that said, if you find a campaign that

works for you, you can just basically pump money intothe machine and get more money out

of it. That’s what attracted me to it at first, but I was unable to find a good campaign and so I

moved on.

It wasn’t until I had started selling other people’s product off of sites that I created that I finally

began to see results.

Niche Sites

The first thing I want to talk about is Niche Sites. These are sites that you create that talk

specifically about one particular topic, or niche. So for example, solar energy panels, or baseball

bats or security guard training.

On these sites, you’re basically trying to rank for one particular keyword in Google (sometimes

more down the road, but usually 1 keyword that relates to that topic to start out with - and again

to know what those keywords should be, check out www.oldyorkcellars.com) -

and by rank, I mean get your page on the first page of a Google search for that keyword. This is

important, because this is where the traffic is - on the first page.

I guess you could setup a page and then setup a PPC (pay per click) campaign to drive traffic to

it, but again that costs money and if you’re not familiar with Google Adwords you can lose a lot

of money fast, like I had just told you. With ranking on the first page of Google, you’re going to

get traffic that is absolutely free, and it’s also traffic that is totally TARGETED, which means they

are perfect for your site because they looked up your keyword in Google, and because of that

they are probably really interested in that topic, obviously.

The way you can make money from affiliate marketing with niche sites is by placing affiliate links

(those links with the special code) for products that relate to your niche. If you built a niche site

that targets a keyword like fly fishing, and you were to rank on the first page for that keyword

(which would be awesome because that is a heavily searched for term) - actually to be more

realistic, let’s pick a long tail keyword related to fly fishing instead. A long-tail keyword is a

keyword that people search for related to a specific topic that has a few extra words in there. It’s

smart to pick these for your site because even though there are less searches for them, they are

less competitive so you have a higher chance of ranking on the first page and you’d get more

traffic in the long run than if you went with a very competitive keyword that you’d never rank for

because the existing top 10 in Google are just too strong.

So, lets say you have a site that is optimized for the keyword fly fishing rods. So, preferably,

you’d purchase the domain “www.oldyorkcellars.com”. That’s preferable because it matches the

keyword exactly and is a “.com”.

.net & .org are next best, and after that I’d add modifiers tothe web address - I wouldn’t go

with a .co or .info or others - it’s said they don’t have as much weight in Google. So, maybe

I’d do www.oldyorkcellars.com - i dunno, but I think you get the point. From there, I would setup a

wordpress blog (because it’s easiest, by far). You can do a one click wordpress install when

you use bluehost as your server (www.oldyorkcellars.com) make sure my

keyword, fly fishing rods is in the title and description of the site, I’d write a number of articles

and then start my backlinking process - all of this is at www.oldyorkcellars.com, which

walks you through exactly how I took my security guard training site from scratch all the way to

#1 in Google - all totally free information, check it out.

So, if I had www.oldyorkcellars.com ranking in Google, I could put in some affiliate links! So, I’d maybe

go to www.oldyorkcellars.com’s Associate Program, find some really high quality fishing reels, write a

review of them on the blog and then link tothe product on amazon using my special affiliate

link. Maybe I’d find a book on someone else’s site that has an affiliate program, and that book is

about Fly Fishing Tips, and I put a link to that in the sidebar of my site so that it’s always there

for people to see and click on. This is how you can make money with affiliate marketing on a

niche site that you create yourself.

This, I’ve had success with. A lot of you already know about my security guard training site

which is making about $ a month, primarily from Adsense Ads on the site, although I

am making some commissions from Amazon products as well. I have 3 other niche sites that

I created since the security site that do not have adsense ads, but only have affiliate links for

other products. I won’t reveal what they are specifically (I know I reveal a lot but I have to save

some of them as private! Just in case.), but they are each making sales which is awesome.

I think this is better than PPC because you can use the niche site or page as a way to show

proof or build confidence in the person that is on your page so that they are more likely

to eventually buy that item, especially if you’re doing a review site. I mean, a lot of people

specifically create review blogs just for specific products because they know people are typing

in that term + the word “review” in Google to read about it. If you can get in front of those people

with a review site, confirm their desire to buy that product and give them an affiliate link to click

on - that’s huge. Plus, like I said, this traffic is pretty much free, and you don’t need any money

to start out with except the cost of the domain and hosting, which is pretty cheap - bluehost

goes for $ a month I think.

Niche sites are good and I’m having a lot of fun with this process - and you can see some good

results relatively quickly (it took me 73 days to get to #1 for my security guard training site) but

that depends on the keyword that you choose, how you are in the Google Rankings and what

kinds of products or promotion you do on your site).

Seriously though, if you’re really interested in affiliate marketing and niche sites, check out the

niche site duel at www.oldyorkcellars.com, OR, if you’re looking for some course work to

help you get some clear direction from a very trusted friend of mine, Corbett Barr (who you may

remember from session 8 on - How to Get More Traffic (www.oldyorkcellars.com

how-to-get-more-traffic/), he has, in my opinion, thetop affiliate marketing course available

for beginners right now. What I love about Corbett and his course is that it’s no hype and

sets realistic expectations - I think this is why he and I get along so well. Anyways, if you’re

interested, you can check it out at http://www.towww.oldyorkcellars.com - that IS an

affiliate link to his course, just so you know. That’s http://www.towww.oldyorkcellars.com

And I’m actually going to stop here today because this is getting quite long, and we’ve got a lot

more to cover so you can expect the next part of this series in the podcast soon, where I’ll start

by finishing off some stuff for affilaite marketing - then get intothe idea of blogging for passive

income (and I’ll give you my opinion on whether or not blogs can be a form of passive income) -

we’ll talk about membership sites, developing software, podcasting, and even how you can turn

services like design work and a lot of freelancing type stuff into a passive income as well, so I

hope you stay tuned for that.

Finally, I would just like to take a moment to thank Cliff Ravenscraft from

www.oldyorkcellars.com, once again, for providing me with all of the great information about

how to setup a successful podcast. The success of this show and how it has helped my brand

would not be without his help - so thank you Cliff. And, I’m actually mentioning this here

because Cliff wants to help you too, if you’re interested in starting up your own podcast. He’s

dedicating the entire month of March to helping anyone who wants to learn the right way to

setup a podcast and learn everything there is to know about it - so I don’t usually like to plug

things like this here on the podcast, but like I said Cliff deserves a lot because he’s helped me

and s of other people, so I’m happy to promote his podcasting A to Z course here for him.

So, if you’re interested, you can check it out at www.oldyorkcellars.comtingatowww.oldyorkcellars.com and good luck if

you’re thinking about going down that road. It’s a lot of fun, as I hope you can tell.

So - that’s it for today, be sure to stay tuned for the next part of this series in the next session.

Until then, thank you so much for your support and I wish you all the best. Cheers!

Bye!

Types of <strong>Passive</strong> <strong>Income</strong> That Can Be Generated Online, And What To Expect - Part 1 www.oldyorkcellars.com Welcome <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> 15th Session of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Smart</strong> <strong>Passive</strong> <strong>Income</strong> Podcast! Thanks for listening in <strong>to</strong>day. I’ve got a lot more awesome sessions of <strong>the</strong> podcast I can’t wait <strong>to</strong> share with you - an interview with a highly successful entrepreneur and author who retired in his early 30s who preaches passive income as well, so I’m really excited about that, and <strong>the</strong>n I’ve got something cool planned where in one session I have maybe 6 or 7 interviews, all in one episode, with a bunch of people who are finding success online with <strong>the</strong>ir own businesses that have nothing <strong>to</strong> do with talking about or teaching making money online. I’m s<strong>to</strong>ked about that one because I really want <strong>to</strong> show you that you don’t need <strong>to</strong> talk about making money online in order <strong>to</strong> make money online. A lot of people assume this is <strong>the</strong> case, because those are <strong>the</strong> people who are <strong>the</strong> most public about it, and I’ll admit I’m one of those people who is now making money from from SPI (which wasn’t initially <strong>the</strong> intention), but - like when I got started in this business, it wasn’t with a make money online business, it was with green exam academy. If you think you’re going <strong>to</strong> make money online by talking about making money online, you better have experience in <strong>the</strong> industry already because you’re going <strong>to</strong> be just rehashing o<strong>the</strong>r people’s information and get lost in <strong>the</strong> crowd. How I got popular in this niche was by using examples from my own experiences outside of <strong>the</strong> make money online niche. Just something for you <strong>to</strong> think about. Sorry - getting a little off tangent here. So, stay tuned for those sessions in <strong>the</strong> future. TODAY, we’re talking about <strong>the</strong> different types of passive income made online and what <strong>to</strong> expect from each of <strong>the</strong>m. When I say “what <strong>to</strong> expect”, I mean <strong>the</strong> costs that are involved, how long till you might see some results, and how one could get started if that’s a passive income model you’re interested in. Plus, I’ll try <strong>to</strong> throw in some tips from my experience <strong>to</strong> help you get some results. I actually had <strong>to</strong> re-record this intro because as I was recording I realized that I had way <strong>to</strong>o much <strong>to</strong> say - that it was going <strong>to</strong> be a very very long episode if I didn’t break it down in<strong>to</strong> parts, so you’ll hear a few of <strong>the</strong> different types of passive income streams <strong>to</strong>day, and <strong>the</strong> rest in <strong>the</strong> next session as well. It’s just hard for me <strong>to</strong> s<strong>to</strong>p talking about all of this stuff - I get so excited about it and want <strong>to</strong> share as much information as possible. I guess that’s a good thing though.

When I first found Smart Passive www.oldyorkcellars.com I was looking for ways to increase my income, so my wife could stay home with my two daughters which were 1 and 3 at the time.  I was having a hard time, because most traditional passive income streams came from large financial investments like stocks, bonds, and real estate and I did not have a large saving account ready to invest with.

I got really excited about the concept that I could create something on my free time that would create passive income for me.  Instead of investing money, I could invest time.
I read and read Pat’s blog and followed the many related links he gave.

I decided that I could do that and I started my own niche site, Living Off Grid Guide.  While I made it, I took notes of the steps that I followed.  Since a comprehensive step-by-step list was not available, I thought I would share this checklist with you.
How to use this checklist:  At the end of most items you will see a link or links to content that should help you if you need more insight on how to complete that item.

Step 1 – Find Your Niche And Create Your Brand

Step 1a: Sign up for a Google Adwords Account

Step 1b: Do your keyword research – if paid method you’ll need to purchase Market Samurai or Long Tail Pro and install them before you start your research.  Niche Site Duel – How to Conduct Keyword Research and SEO Analysis (Free and Paid Methods)

Step 1c: Choose the right niche.  Niche Site Duel – Criteria and Thoughts for Keyword and Niche Selection, REALITY CHECK – 24 Questions That Will Challenge You and Your Brand (+NSD Update)

Step 2 – Create Your Site

Step 2a: Sign up at BlueHost and purchase a domain name.  Niche Site Duel – Branding, Domain Names and The NSD Leaderboard!

Step 2b: Install WordPress or a different content management system

Step 2c: Choose your WordPress Theme

Step 2d: Install some important plugins.  19 WordPress Plugins – Some You Probably Didn’t Know About

Step 2e: Sign up for Google Analytics and integrate it into your website.  I used a plug-in called Header and Footer Scripts by www.oldyorkcellars.com

Step 3 – Make A Launch Plan

Step 3a: Create a Pre-Launch Plan.  How to Launch a Brand New Website (with a Bang!) – The Ultimate Guide

Step 3b: Create your Coming Soon Landing Page and a solid About Me page.  SPI : Rapid Audience Building For Accelerated Hypergrowth (From Scratch) – Landing Pages and Conversion Optimization, Niche Site Duel (UPDATE) – We’re LIVE! Landing Pages and Pre-Launch Goals, Ask Pat Episode &#; How do you craft the perfect About Page

Step 4 – Start Collecting Email Addresses

Sign up for AWeber, start your first newsletter and create a sign up form. Place the sign up from on your Coming Soon page and your About Page.  The Beginner’s Guide to Starting a Newsletter, How to Land Your Emails in the Gmail “Primary” Tab Every Time, How One SPI Reader Built an Email List of 1, Subscribers Even Before She Launched Her Blog, and A Ninja Email Autoresponder Trick You Can Use to Save Time and Make More Money

Step 5 – Create Content

Create a content hierarchy and brainstorm with using tools like www.oldyorkcellars.com  You can also do an Amazon book search for books related to your niche and look inside the covers at the table of contents as a helpful brainstorming tool.  You’ll probably need at least 10 articles to start with.  The Content Pyramid: Healthy Portions of Posts for Your Blog, How to Launch a Brand New Website (with a Bang!) – The Ultimate Guide

Step 6 – Market Your Site

Now that you have your foundation you need to promote your website and gain more exposure by doing the Outreach Program and doing guest posts.  You can also seek out reporters and suggest they write an article about your niche site.  How to Get Explosive & Targeted Traffic – An Alternative to Guest Posting

Step 7 – Launch

Post your grand opening material and replace your Coming Soon page with a Welcome/Get Started page.  Make sure your email sign up form is available in your side bar and on your Welcome Page.  If you are using WordPress, you can install the Authenticator plugin so you can work on your site without the world seeing it.  If you do this, make sure to disable it on launch day.

Step 8 &#; Grow Your Site

Step 8a: After your launch, you will need to continue to provide rock solid, amazing, and killer content in a consistent time frame.  How to Write Blog Posts That Go Viral, 5 “Five-Minute or Less” Blogging Tips That Yield Big Results. I’m Using Tip #1 in This Title.

Step 8b: Make sure to continue your newsletters on a consistent time frame as well.

Step 8c: Keep up the SEO using techniques shown here: SPI Backlinking—What’s Working and Is It Even Still Important with Brian Dean from www.oldyorkcellars.com and this : THE Backlinking Strategy That Works: and Beyond Edition

Step 8d: The steps I use for writing an article:

1. If you don&#;t have a subject; Go to OSE and put in a competitor&#;s page ie: www.oldyorkcellars.com and look at “Top Pages” Choose a subject with the most backlinks
1b. Save any urls that have a lot of backlinks

2. Go to www.oldyorkcellars.com and find the most shared articles on your subject
2b. Save the urls that are most relivant and have the most shares

3. Go to Google and look at the top 20 search results on your subject
3b. Save the urls that are most relivant

5. Go to Udemy and look up classes on your subject. Use them to help structure your article

6. Go to Amazon and look at the table of contents in books on your subject to help you structure your article.

7. Write the article using the techniques listed in: www.oldyorkcellars.com&#;s Skyscraper Technique

8. Go to www.oldyorkcellars.com and find open source pictures that accent your article.

9. Build article in Word Press

Add the pictures

Create a custom title and description

Add tags and categories

Post article,

Share it on Twitter, Facebook and Google+

Go through the urls that you saved from parts 1b, 2b, and 3b and put them into www.oldyorkcellars.com or OSE to find the sites that backlink to those competitor&#;s articles.

Find the contact info for those sites and reach out to them using this template:

Hey {Name},

I was searching for some articles about {your topic} today and I came across your page: {their page with the link to the competitors article}.

I noticed that you linked to one of my favorite articles &#; {competitors article title}

Just wanted to give you a heads up that I created a similar article. It is like {competitors article title}, but has additional information: {Your article link}

Might be worth a mention on your page.

Either way, keep up the awesome work!

Regards,
Your name
Other email promotion tips www.oldyorkcellars.com&#;s Email People

step 1: establish some common ground between you and the influencer.
step 2: mention credibility &#;triggers&#; &#; size of readership, other influencers that have shared this content, mainstream magazines you&#;ve been featured in, or third party research or data
step 3: share your real motive

Step 9 – Make Money

Step 9a: Finally monetize your site.  You can use Google Adsense, affiliate programs, or sell a service, like an eBook.  SPI : Marketing and Monetization with Mom Blogger, Meagan Francis, Niche Site Duel My Monetization Strategy, Smart Passive www.oldyorkcellars.com Search affiliate links.

Step 9b: You can use www.oldyorkcellars.com to find tons of products that you can be an affiliate for.

Conclusion

Well, there you have it.  As Pat says, it is a lot of work, but it is also very do-able. Just stay focused, follow the list and work on it each day.  I&#;ve used these techniques and over the last 2 years I&#;ve brought my site from 0 to 1, visitors a month with only 20 articles written.  If I was able to spend more time and have written more articles I would have a ton more.  I also have about email subscribers.

I also wanted to let you know that a couple of the links above are affiliate links, so if you use them to start your AWeber or BlueHost accounts, then I will get some commission for that.  I really appreciate it if you do, but of course you don&#;t have to.

How about you guys.  Is there anything you would do different?  Is there something you would add?

Criteria and Thoughts for Keyword and Niche Selection Niche Site Duel

Niche Site Duel Criteria and Thoughts for Keyword and Niche Selection By Pat Flynn on May 14, When starting a brand new website, choosing the right topic for your site is the most important part of the process. Everything about our website – the name of it, what it looks like, what we publish – is determined by the topic or niche that e hoose, so it s a dato that e spe d so e ti e dis ussi g this efo e e actually begin. When building a niche site, specifically, the target keyword that you choose to build a website around can mean the difference between success and failure. I personally believe that anyone can compete with any keyword. Yep – any keyword. Even 1-word keywords. The question is, how much time and money do you want to spend to outrank the existing competition? High volume search terms combined with high levels of competition means that ou e t pi all goi g to spe d a lot o e ti e and money on your campaign efo e ou see a esults. That, o ou e goi g to ha e to e incredibly creative, which can work, but you also have to assume that the existing sites in those competitive markets are already heavily competing with each other as well. This is why, at least for most of us with a limited budget, and perhaps a limited amount of time as well, it is better and makes more sense to try to dominate a niche where domination seems feasible and reasonable. Have you ever heard of the phrase: The ri hes are in the ni hes. Well, it s t ue. It s ot e ause the e is o e o e flo i g i s alle a kets – markets within existing markets – that s obviously not true. Get to the top of Google fo a ke o d like laptop o pute s a d ou e golden, but the fact is that getting there is going to be difficult. Very difficult. Ni he do , a d ou e o e likel to la d highe i the sea h e gi es. Yes, ou ll e highe fo ke o ds ith less sea h olu e… ut also fo ke o ds ith less competition. I d athe e o the st page of Google fo a ke o d that gets , e a t searches per month, than on the 5th page for a keyword that gets , searches per month. Nobody visits the 5th page. Heck, nobody visits the 2nd page either! If ou e doi g a sea h a d ou do t fi d hat ou e looki g fo o the fi st page, what do you do? You refine your search You i he do a d get o e spe ifi ith the o ds that ou ite i the search field. This is the advantage building a niche site has over building a more general website – you and the site you build are there to serve specific queries from people looking for specific answers. If you can become the ultimate resource for that topic, to serve those answers, naturally your website is going to (eventually) rank higher, but beyond what happens in the search engines, you re actually helping people. And THAT is my first criteria for keyword selection as we approach the official launch of Niche Site Duel – that whatever topic I decide to choose to build a website around, whatever keywords I find during the keyword research phase, that it s a topi that I elie e I a do something to help people, one way or another. Whethe that s th ough skill o k o ledge ithi that topi i.e. www.oldyorkcellars.com), or my ability to research and curate information that I fi d ette tha hat s out the e al ead i.e. “e u it Gua dT ai www.oldyorkcellars.com from NSD , as lo g as I feel like I a help, the that s a pote tial topi o ke o d. Then, I can investigate further. Fo the est of this post, I goi g to fu the defi e a spe ifi set of criteria that I goi g to use he I o du t ke o d esea h a d sele t a topi fo website. If ou e follo i g alo g, ou a use this ite ia fo ou self if ou d like, ut feel free to change things around if you wish based on where you feel ou e at ith the process. 1. Search Volume [Exact]: min. 3, Local Searches Per Month Search volume is the number of times a particular keyword is searched for in Google, a d it s t pi all epo ted o a pe o thl asis, although dail is also o o . It s a de e t i di ato of ho u h pote tial t affi ou ould get to your website (from that one keyword) if you sat in the #1 position in Google for that keyword. There are three types of searches: broad match, phrase match, and exact match. Without getting too detailed about what means what, just know that most keyword research tools, such as Long Tail Pro (my affiliate link) and even the free Google Adwords Keyword Tool default on broad match, which is dangerous because the data can be terribly skewed. Make sure you conduct your keyword research using exact match at all times. One more time: Make sure you conduct your keyword research using exact match. This will give you true data for how many times a keyword (and that keyword only), in that particular order has been searched for in Google. Why a minimum of 3, searches? In SPI Podcast Session #66, Spencer Haws from www.oldyorkcellars.com and creator of Long Tail Pro shared that for his multiple niche site business, his search volume ite ia as a i i u of , . That s less tha sea hes pe da , a d ou have to understand that even if your site is sitting at the top position in Google, not all % of the people who search for a specific term are going to click the #1 esult. Yes, the e a e lo g tail ke o ds hi h o e i to pla , ut I d athe sta t at something much higher, so a minimum of 3,, or about searches per da , see s easo a le. Agai , this is a i i u , a d I hopi g fo so ethi g much larger. This will simply be a part of the filtering process. Just to give you some perspective, my primary keyword from NSD, security guard training, has 5, exact local searches per month. 2. SEO Competition – Is there room in the Top 10 of Google? After finding keywords that meet the search criteria above, the next most important thing to look at is what the existing competition for that keyword looks like in Google. Specifically, how difficult would it be to get on the first page? How about the very top? As much as we can see the exact information related to specific websites that e e competing against, determining whether or not it might be possible to get o the fi st page o to the top of Google is a skill that does t o e eas , a d it does t o e right away. Some may even call it an art. Only through experience and learning from the example of others can we make wiser decisions about where to focus our time and effort when building niche websites. Du i g N“D . , ou a e % su e that I ll gi e you an over-the-shoulder look sha e e a t o petitio esea h p o ess ith ou a d e e thi g that s goi g th ough head. “pe ifi all , I ll e looki g at thi gs like:  Is the keyword used in the URL of the pages listed in the top 10 of Google for that keyword?  Is the keyword used in the Title of the page, and the description?  The number of incoming links to those pages, and the quality of those links.  Page Authority  mozRank  Page Rank  Anchor Text distribution.  Content on the competing page. With so many things to look at when it comes to competition, it can sometimes be difficult to put exact numbers on everything. A set of competing pages, for example, may look great for us except for 1 or 2 of the above. Does that mean we have to move on to another keyword? Not necessarily. Agai , the e s so t of a a t that o es he it o es to “EO o petitio , so I ll hopefull gi e ou so e thi gs to thi k a out he I goi g th ough the process with you soon. As I p e iousl e tio ed, I ll e usi g “pe e s soft a e, Long Tail Pro to more ui kl assess the o petitio fo spe ifi ke o ds. The t uth is, ou do t eed to spend any money on keyword research software because you can manually find the above information on your own and put them into a spreadsheet before you choose your niche, but software like Long Tail Pro and Market Samurai, among a few others can save you a ton of time. Spencer has been kind enough to offer a $30 discount to all Smart Passive Income readers for Long Tail Pro! Thanks Spencer! Click here to get Long Tail Pro for $30 OFF the original price! The Grandma Test This is an easy, but important test – at least to me. Once I find a keyword with decent search volume and relatively low competition, I ll ask self the follo i g uestio : If I created a website in this niche and it became incredibly successful, would I be comfortable sharing my success with my grandma? If the answer is no, then I may have to think twice about getting into this particular niche. 4. Can I EARN Money in this Niche? “o ou e fou d a i he ith de e t sea h olu e a d lo o petitio , a d your grandma approves too – the next most important question is, can you earn money from it? The 4-Hour Work Week by Timothy Ferriss, Escape , Live Anywhere, and Join the New Rich . Pretty much the most awesome book in the entire world. I reference this quite a bit in my posts. As much as people build niche websites in order to generate an income, relatively little a e a d esea h goes i to the possi ilit of o etizatio . Is t that a su d? That s h so eti es ou hea a out people ho ha e e sites ranking high in Google, maybe even in the top position, who are making little to no money at all. Researching monetization is just as important as doing keyword research for search volume and competition. You do t a t to put i all that o k a d get to the top of Google only to then ealize that ou e i a i he ith little o o earning potential. Note the specific use of the term earn. It s ot make money in or generate profit from, but earn – ea i g: ou e a le to o t i ute so ethi g to the i he and get paid back in return. When it comes to earning potential, the idea here is to understand if there is money flowing within that market, and if there are specific ways for people to pay you back for something that you provide. Here are some specific tests and metrics ou a use to see if the e s ea i g pote tial ithi the i he that ou e selected:  The Average Cost-Per-Click (CPC) in Google Adwords. The average CPC is a metric that can be found in the free Google Adwords Keyword tool, and in most paid keyword research software as well. The average CPC is the average amount that advertisers who are using Google Adwords are paying every time someone clicks on an ad relevant to that specific keyword. This is not ho u h o e e ll ea o ou e site for each click if we were to use Google Adsense. If you publish ads using Google Adsense, you will earn a percentage of the overall CPC per click. A higher CPC means that advertisers are competing and bidding against each other, which is often a good sig that the e s o e flo i g ithi that specific market. More advertisers also means that there are potentially more products, tools and services that you could promote on your website.  What Advertisements Show Up in a Google Search? This one is easy. Type in your target keyword in Google and see what ads, if any, show up at the top and/or side of the resulting page. If there are a lot of advertisers, this is another good sign that there is some earning potential here. Advertisers are willing to pay for premium spots in Google search, which means they might be willing to pay you, or work with you as a partner. If there are few o o esults, tha that s so ethi g to take ote of a d the i he e ui es fu the i estigatio . Do t o pletel s at h the keyword off the list just yet – not all markets have companies that advertise using Google Adwords.  Are There Books or Products that Show Up in an www.oldyorkcellars.com Search? www.oldyorkcellars.com is a sea h e gi e. It s ot just a sea h e gi e though, it s a sea h e gine where we know the people doing the searching a e u e s. The a e t looki g fo f ee i fo atio like a people do o Google – the a e the e to u stuff. If the e s a de e t ua tit a d ualit of products and/or books that show up relevant to your target keyword, the that s a good sig that the e a e people illi g to pa fo i fo atio o p odu ts ithi that spe ifi i he. Plus, ou ll e a le to see if the e s anything worth promoting as an affiliate too.  Are Other Sites Promoting Stuff, and if so, What? Do a quick search for websites related to your potential target keyword and see what comes up. Click around and see if any of the resulting websites or blogs are selling anything – eithe stuff that the e eated o thei o , o p odu ts or services that belong to someone else. Be sure to note the difference between an automatically generated advertisement (like a Google Adsense ad, hi h usuall has a little tag o the ad itself that sa s Ad Choi es o Ads Google a d a eal pa t ership or promotion. The ads are still useful, but the partnerships and affiliate promotions tell us an even better sto of hat s a aila le fo us. Make ote of the p o otio s a d e sites that you find. If you wanted to find blogs, specifically, type logs:target keyword (without quotations) i Google, a d ou ll get a list of logs i your search result. These are good sites to include in a database for potential outreach later.  “ear h for Money Keywords. Here another fun trick. To discover if there are potentially things that you could promote and sell on your website, run the following Google search queries (with quotations): o ta get ke o d o sale o ta get ke o d fo sale o ta get ke o d p i e o ta get ke o d affiliate o ta get ke o d pa t e s o ta get ke o d edia kit o ta get ke o d p odu t des iptio o ta get ke o d e uip e t o ta get ke o d se i es o ta get ke o d p odu ts o ta get ke o d usto e e ie o ta get ke o d testi o ial o ta get ke o d o a aila le o There are a lot of other potential keywords to use here, but you get the idea. Not all of the above will produce resulting products or items that prove this is a market with money in it, but a lot of them will, and you should obviously keep track of the ones that seem legit. If you get nothing from the above searches – then you may need to thi k agai a out the spe ifi i he that ou e ta geti g. Passing the above tests for earning potential o t e essa il ea that ou e % going to earn an income if you build a website in that niche. Of course, there are a lot of other factors involved, many based on you a d ou e site s pe fo a e, ut at least ou ll k o the e s pote tial he e a d ou e ot blindly throwing darts at the wall. 5. The Post Test The post test is a particular criterion that addresses something else that a lot of people, i ludi g self, te d to fo get so eti es e ause e e so e th alled with search volume and SEO competition. Once we select a niche and put up a opti ized e site, e e goi g to eed to put some content on it. The post test ensures that we have the ability to write a decent amount of content for our website, or at least hire someone to write for if it we wanted to. Sure, you can choose to have a 5-page website about a particular topic if you want, and if that content is great then you can make something happen with it, ut pe so all I shooti g fo a igge i he site, o e he e the e s e ough content to get even more traffic from the long tail keyword searches that people type in related to the topic. With my security guard training site from NSD, I had mentioned that security guard training gets 5, exact match searches per month. What you may not realize is that less than 10% of my traffic comes from that one keyword. The rest (over 25, hits per month) comes from the sum of long tail keywords that people are using to find me in Google, which comes as a result of the amount of o te t I e pu lished o the site, hi h at this poi t is about posts. (I li ed to # i Google i ith less tha 5 total posts, I’ e just o ti ued to add content and grow over time) Here’s how the post test is going to go down: Afte fi di g a pote tial ke o d, I goi g to eate a sp eadsheet fo that pa ti ula ke o d a d egi to ite do log post ideas. I ll sta t ith as a as I can think of off the top of my head, approaching the topic as a complete beginner or someone trying to understand that topic. If I run out of ideas before 50, which is always the ase, I ll use the follo i g st ategies to fill i the holes:  I ll use the p i a ke o d as a seed ke o d i Long Tail Pro to find related keywords that I could (and should) write about.  I ll do a Google sea h to see hat othe sites a e talki g a out elated to the i he. I ll use that as i spi atio fo e log post ideas. I a dis over other topics that relate to the primary keyword that I can branch off of too.  I ll go o to A azo . o a d t pe i ke o d to fi d ooks o the topi . If the e a e a , I ll look i side the o e to ie the ta le of o te ts to make sure I hit all of the i po ta t poi ts elated to the i he. I ll also ake ote of the ook as ell e ause that s so ethi g I ould p o ote as as affiliate down the road. If anything, it at least it shows me who else I might need to connect with.  I ll sea h fo p o lems or issues people are having related to the topic in discussion forums or social media. The nice thing about this strategy is that once you have this list of 50 potential posts, ou al ead k o e a tl hat to pu lish. If ou e hi i g so e od to write for you, then you can just hand them this list, or a part of it when you begin working together. These topics can also turn into videos and other forms of media as well. If I st uggle getti g to posts, the I ha e to eassess hethe o ot it s a topic that I really want to get into. 6. The Ability to Create a ‘Beastly Resource’ In SPI Podcast Session #67, Neil Patel from www.oldyorkcellars.com shared some SEO strategies that really impressed me, and also made a lot of sense. One of those strategies was the use of a massive guide or resource – an extensive, noteworthy and epic publication or tool that solves a specific problem or educates people i su h g eat detail, that it a t go u oti ed. To gi e ou so e perspective about hat these guides look like, he k out Neil s Advanced Guide to SEO, and his Advanced Guide to Content Marketing. Now, 45, words like what Neil publishes is probably a bit overkill for what e e t i g to do, ut a all ou eed to k o guide pu lished o a e site, as opposed to that same content put in an eBook or something, which is less likely to e sha ed o fou d i the sea h e gi es, o p o oted o othe people s e sites is s a t, a d it s goi g to e the o e st ateg du i g the launch of whatever website I choose to create. Trevor Page from SPI Podcast Session #55 used a similar strategy to jumpstart the launch of his website, which teaches people how to program with Java. In less tha a ea , he s ee a le to get thousa ds of isito s to his e site ea h month, sell an eBook and start a membership site, and it all started with a very detailed Programming guide, which eventually got picked up on www.oldyorkcellars.com and other websites. Fo hate e ke o ds fit the ite ia so fa , I goi g to dete i e if the e is a a to eate a eastl esou e that a t go u oti ed. It does t e essa il have to be a written guide either, but it could be something different and unique that is extremely useful for people who are looking for information within a spe ifi i he. Fo e a ple, o “pe e s survival knife niche website, he built a matrix or table of all of the available survival knives that potential customers can sort and filter based on their specific needs. Marketing and launching the website with this resource is a topic for another dis ussio , hi h e ll get into in the near future once I start building that resource. A i he, I elie e, ould ha e it s ulti ate esou e o tool, ut if fo so e easo I a t i agi e o thi k of eati g this esou e, the it ill p o a l reflect on my ability to serve those in that niche and may be a niche to stay away from. Where We Are At Now with NSD? The purpose of this post was to share my thinking process when it comes to the i he that I ll e sele ti g fo N“D . . I k o a lot of ou a e a ious to get sta ted, a d I a as ell, ut it s i po ta t that e fi st u de sta d the path a d direction we are taking before we start the journey together. Look out fo a up o i g post a out the p i ate lea i g g oup I eati g fo N“D . , he e ou ll ha e a hance to work directly with me and a handful of other people so that we can work through our niche sites together. That said , anyone can participate in NSD, and I encourage you to. I ll e setti g up a s ste to help us all hold ea h othe a ou ta le, keep track of e e o e s p og ess a d keep ea h othe oti ated.

(The above link is an affiliate link and I do earn a commission when you make a purchase through this link, at no extra cost to you. If you have any questions about the software, please shoot me a quick message on Twitter or Facebook a d I’ll get back to you as soon as I can! Thank you!) 3.

I noticed that you linked to one of my favorite articles &#; {competitors article title}

Just wanted to give you a heads up that I created a similar article. It is like {competitors article title}, but has additional information: {Your article link}

Niche Site, SEO

A Step By Step Plan To Rank Higher in the Search Engines

yoast site analysisTo keep this week’s theme of “where the Smart Passive Income Blog is lacking and what you can learn from it” (see my last post about conversion strategies), today I’m going to share some sections of an SEO audit that was performed on the SPI blog by renowned WordPress and web development expert, Joost De Valk, who runs a very successful blog at www.oldyorkcellars.com

This was a paid analysis that I was happy to invest in because I’m always looking to improve my websites, and others have told me how helpful and thorough Joost’s reports were.

I learned a ton from his detailed 8-page analysis, however the one big thing I learned from this experience is that the SPI blog is not at all properly optimized for SEO. It’s doing some things right, but it’s doing a lot of things wrong too.

Now, I’m definitely not clueless when it comes to search engine optimization. I can bust out a niche site from scratch and have it optimized enough to obtain a #1 ranking in Google and generate a part-time passive income. But this blog, specifically, was created back in when I knew nothing about SEO, and as time went on and the blog grew to what it is today, the structure of the site lay stagnant in “pre-Pat knows what he’s doing now” mode. This is why I invested in this report, so I can update/fix/change things to the way it should be.

All that said, notice that even though my site wasn’t properly search engine optimized, I was still able to build a very successful following and have one of the fastest growing blogs in the world. And even though my site wasn’t properly search engine optimized, I was still able to (eventually) get to the #2 spot in Google for my primary keyword, “passive income”. I’m 2nd behind Wikipedia, who some say is nearly impossible to overtake in the rankings.

I’ve done pretty well without spending a ton of time and money on SEO, so to sum it up for you:

SEO isn’t everything.

So many people focus on SEO, SEO, SEO – and they forget about some of the other important ways to attract visitors, build a brand and establish one’s self as a leader in a niche.

Don’t get me wrong though – SEO is important, and you’d be a fool not to build an optimized website and shoot for keywords and organic search engine traffic – but all I’m saying is that it’s not everything.

Just something to keep in mind.

Let’s jump to some highlights of the report…

No Follows

A “no-follow” is an attribute you can give to any link on your site to basically tell Google not to count that link, so it doesn’t influence the link target’s ranking in the search engine’s index. It was put in place by Google to stop blog comment spam, however in the world of SEO, another reason you would want to “no-follow” some of your outgoing links is because you don’t want “link juice” leaking to unneeded pages and minimizing the power and authority of the post or page that the link is on.

To quote Joost directly from the SEO report:

“You’re already, correctly, nofollowing the links to commenter sites and in comments, as default in WordPress. You’re not, however nofollowing other stuff that should be nofollowed. The following links need to be nofollowed to prevent either link juice leaking to unneeded pages, or to avoid penalties:

  • All affiliate links you use; each and every one of them (Although he later brings up “hiding” affiliate links as a better option).
  • The links to your RSS feeds, twittercounter, and all social links should be nofollowed too.
  • The privacy policy link in the footer of the site should be nofollowed except on the homepage.

I won’t get into the details here, but you can read more about nofollow and how to insert a nofollow link on your website here.

Before I got this report, I didn’t even know what all this meant, so if you’re confused, don’t worry – I was there too.

Heading Structure

Heading structure, or how the titles of the blog, posts, pages and any sub-sections in the body and sidebar are classified and tagged, is important for SEO. The different labels and tags help search engines (and people!) understand what is important.

Here’s what Joost had to say about my heading structure:

Your heading structure is far from ideal. In general, all your sidebar headings should be H4, not H1, not H2. And try to make all your headings more relevant by including some of your main keywords in them.

You have too many H1′s on your homepage (and all other pages too). In general, there should be only one H1 on each page. For your homepage, that should be your site’s title, not including your tagline. The tagline should be H2…

Right now, your site title isn’t in an H1 at all, so you should fix that (but just for the front page).

Then there’s like 10 H1′s for the posts, these should be H2′s or H3′s…

Okay, some obvious mistakes here…but why?

The SPI Blog runs on custom designed WordPress theme, and the theme was obviously not built with SEO in mind. I’m not putting the blame on anybody, but my guess is that the designer I hired was excellent at design work (I love the design of my blog!), and he was definitely able to code a site that works, but he just didn’t know about proper search engine optimization methods.

The big lesson here is that if you do go with a design team to custom build a theme for you, make sure they know a bit about SEO as well, or you have a person who can clean up and advise the designer on exactly how it should work on the backend.

To give you an analogy in an industry that I’m very familiar with, it’s like an architect who designs a building, but doesn’t really know all the fine and intricate details about how the inside of the building is supposed to work (mechanical, electrical, plumbing, etc.). That’s left for the engineers.

Internal Linking

Backlinks (links from other websites) to your site play one of the most significant roles in SEO, however internal linking – linking within your site from one post or page to another, is a key factor as well –  and is a lot easier to work with, since you have complete control over them.

A good internal linking structure can ensure that your site gets properly spidered. It will also build relevancy of a page to a particular keyword and it can increase the PageRank of an internal page as well.

Here are some interesting things Joost has to say about SPI’s internal linking structure:

Your menu and header area is quite extensive and has lots of links. This means that each and every page in every category, has loads of links before the content starts. Having those links is not really bad, per se, but if you could, with some CSS hacking, move the entire top level navigation to the bottom of the HTML (while preserving it in the same spot in the design) that would be very beneficial.

Archives

In your menu, you’re linking to your Archives. These are primarily date based. I dislike date based archives with a vengeance because there’s almost no one who would ever be interested in them, including a search engine: you want content arranged by topic, not because you happened to write it a day after the previous article. So I’d get rid of them entirely, and instead move your category list and tag cloud way up on that page.

Also, you have to de-dupe your articles and categories. For instance, you have a tag “affiliate marketing” and a category of the same name. There’s no use for that. Choose either of them, but not both. In general, I’d go for main categories, and then narrow down by tag, that way people and search engines will know where to find stuff.

Sidebar

Your sidebar is way too heavy. In my opinion, you should get rid of a LOT of the stuff on it, especially everything that has too many links in it. The “most popular” / “hot posts” / “top commenters” widget for instance, but also your Twitter feed, and the recent posts block. Instead, use it to promote more really special posts like you’re doing with blogger’s guide to Facebook.

This is all really great advice, not just for SEO, but for usability as well. I also find it interesting that Derek Halpern, from our conversion strategy video in my last post, suggested many of these same things. I guess I have some work to do.

Functionality and Plugins Used

Plugins are awesome – they are what make WordPress so wonderful to work with – however if you add too many or don’t get the settings right, it can begin to screw with how people and search engines load and read your site.

Joost highlighted a plugin that I know a lot of us use, and he also recommended a few I hadn’t heard of before either:

All in One SEO

I’m no enemy of the All in One SEO plugin, but the way it’s configured here should be improved:

  • Disable the canonical function, it’s poorly written and not better than WordPress core or Thematic.
  • Disable Use categories & Use tags for META keywords, as meta keywords are no longer needed.
  • Dynamically create keywords for each post or page: no longer needed either.
  • Disable the auto generation of descriptions, it’s pure nonsense. Either write them by hand, or don’t have them at all.

Recommended Plugins

There’s a couple of plugins I recommend you start using outside of the ones already mentioned, a short explanation follows per plugin:

  • MediaRSS – this plugin adds Yahoo!’s MediaRSS tags to your RSS feed. This allows search engines that support it (both Yahoo! and Google do) to recognize the images in your blog posts more easily.
  • WP www.oldyorkcellars.com – this plugin automatically reduces the size of uploaded images, in a lossless way.
  • Clean Notifications – you might like this plugin for it’s ability to clean up the notification emails you get when you receive new comments or pingbacks / trackbacks.

Implementation

As you can see, I have a quite a bit of work to do, and all of the above advice is only about 3 pages of Joost’s 8-page analysis of the blog. I wanted to make sure I kept this post at a reasonable length and share some of the less technical, more actionable items with you.

Joost and I had originally scheduled a webinar to get into more detail about the report and share it with you live, however it was delayed and we haven’t been able to align our schedules yet. It is still something I’d love to do because I know you and I would get a lot out of it, so I’ll definitely keep trying and keep you posted.

Anyways, a big thank you to Joost De Valk from Yoast for his site analysis and expert advice. I’m actually in the middle of a site redesign (more-so on the backend) and I’ll be putting his advice into place for sure.

I hope you’ve enjoyed this week of analysis and constructive criticism of the SPI blog. I’m happy to share my journey with you. It’s definitely a learning experience for all of us and I hope that I’ve at least showed you that when it comes to building a successful business online, you don’t have be % perfect or know everything there is to know about everything. But, you should always be learning, always be taking action and always be trying to improve.

Cheers, and have an awesome and safe weekend!

My First Niche Site: Update #1 &#; One Month In

My First Niche Site

This is Part #1 of a series. A list of all the other updates can be found at the bottom of this post.

Please note that Modeling For Kids is no longer an active site. If you&#;d like to know why I shut down the site and started up a new one, click here.

I was first introduced to the smartpassiveincome niche site duel of niche sites by Pat Flynn of Smart Passive Income. He ran a “niche site duel” with Tyrone Shum. It was hugely successful, both in terms of the popularity of the competition and the results, smartpassiveincome niche site duel. Pat’s May income report shows his smartpassiveincome niche site duel site, Security Guard Training HQ, smartpassiveincome niche site duel, bringing in $1, Pat&#;s only meaningful source of income from the site at present is Adsense. Not a bad effort &#; it certainly caught my eye!

Let’s Cut To The Chase

I am not going to waste your time explaining what a niche site is, as it has already been covered in great detail by many others. If you are completely new to niche sites then be sure to check out Pat&#;s Niche Site Duel Hub. I am skipping all of the preliminaries because I want to get down to the interesting stuff.

In this first article, I am going to reveal what niche I chose and why, smartpassiveincome niche site duel. In future instalments I will further reveal my strategies, and of course, their benefits (or lack thereof!).

My Niche Site&#;s Key Statistics

  • Site online: 29 days
  • Visits:
  • Google ranking for my primary key phrase: #17
  • Gross income generated: £ ($)

Choosing A Niche

This was a toughy. Most of the successful exponents of niche marketing consider key phrase research smartpassiveincome niche site duel be the most important part of the whole endeavour. With that in mind, I read all sorts of guidance on (a) how to come up with niche smartpassiveincome niche site duel, and (b) what criteria to apply to chosen key phrases to calculate their viability.

I quickly smartpassiveincome niche site duel out that there is a lot of information out there. Unfortunately, the information is often conflicting. In the end, I decided to take a leap, knowing that my knowledge base was far from wholly developed. Yes, smartpassiveincome niche site duel, there was (and is) a risk that I would get it all wrong, smartpassiveincome niche site duel, but as far as I am concerned, the best learning is in doing, smartpassiveincome niche site duel. I am a big fan of trial by fire. You can read about niche site development all day, but that won’t get the niche site built!

Even if this site fails I feel I will have progressed, as long as I can then dive into the next one with far more knowledge as to how to succeed, smartpassiveincome niche site duel. I am definitely looking long-term with this venture, so a failure say three months in isn’t going to halt my momentum. I believe that one of the biggest mistakes you can make in life, let alone business, is to not persist. Persistence is so often the key to success.

Niche Site Research Resources

I recommend two guys when it comes to advice on researching your niche site key phrase (and for any other advice on niche sites, for that matter): Pat Flynn of Smart Passive Income and Glen Allsopp of ViperChill. You can check out Pat’s Niche Site Duel Hub as I mentioned above. With impeccable timing, Glen has just published an in-depth article on keyword research, and I strongly recommend that you check it out: &#;The Ultimate Guide To Keyword Research&#. Be sure to brew yourself a cup of tea before you sit down to read it!

But I digress &#; back to my story. After a couple of hours of research, considering key phrases as wide ranging as “shin splints” to “property investment” (my day job), I settled smartpassiveincome niche site duel my choice&#;

Modeling For Kids

A bit out of left field, I know. The journey to this key phrase wasn’t particularly linear – I believe you should explore all angles when it comes to keyword research, as you never know what might pop up. I started by looking at “teacher training”, which led to “training to model”, smartpassiveincome niche site duel, which led to “child modeling”. A less competitive variant of smartpassiveincome niche site duel modeling” was “modeling for kids”.

As a quick aside, most of the screenshots you will see on this article are from Market Samurai (not an affiliate link &#; why?), which I strongly recommend if you are getting into niche sites. The screenshot smartpassiveincome niche site duel reveals my key phrase&#;s vital statistics:

My First Niche Site

Those are results based upon an exact match, smartpassiveincome niche site duel. A broad match returns 40, monthly searches. My gut tells me that there is a lot of potential in this niche if you can rank for various associated key phrases. For instance, if I can rank well for “modeling for kids” and “child modeling” as well as various long tail keywords, the potential search traffic could be considerable.

Competition

I was relatively pleased with the level of competition for my chosen key phrase, shown below:

My First Niche Site

I won&#;t delve into the intricacies of Market Samurai here (as they have a great resource over at the Noble Samurai Dojo that does a much better job than I could), but I will point out the few key elements that I considered:

  • Domain Age: for bitcoin investing 2022 20 reason the screenshot has not displayed the domain age, but the results aren&#;t great. All sites are four years or older. However, I was happy that the 1st spot managed to rank at the top with just a 5 year old domain. It was out-ranking 10+ year old sites. By that logic, there is room for me to outrank a mere 5 year old site if I can optimize well and offer quality content.
  • Page Rank: nothing too scary here, and the number one spot only has a PR of 1.
  • Index Count: only three sites have a significant number of pages &#; I&#;m only 29 days in and already smartpassiveincome niche site duel a how much was bitcoin in july 2022 index count than the majority of the top
  • Backlinks: again, nothing to worry about here. I already have the fifth most number of backlinks out of the top
  • Meta Tag Optimization: none of the top 10 sites are well optimized for my key phrase.

Overall, I think that I have a decent chance of toppling these guys. Only time will tell!

Four Simple Steps To Niche Site Success

Okay, I am being facetious. The steps may be simple to discuss, but they are far from easy to implement.

1. Research

As mentioned above, this is the most important part of the whole process, smartpassiveincome niche site duel. Unfortunately, I am a bit concerned that I may have made a couple of mistakes in my research. I am concerned about (a) the competitiveness of the top 10 and (b) the value of the key phrase (i.e. is the Adwords cost per click high, and do people with commercial intent search for that key phrase?). Those are essentially the two key factors when it comes to key phrase research (although there are others).  Nonetheless I will soldier on, because even if I do fail, the process followed in failing will have taught me a great deal.

2. Content

When it comes to content, smartpassiveincome niche site duel, I plan to follow two very simple principles – quantity and quality. There are many different niche site strategies out there – you will probably read a lot about “set it and forget it” sites. I am not a fan of this method. I would much prefer to create a loyal community by offering quality content, and plenty of it. I think that this can potentially lead to greater long-term benefits.

29 days ago, I knew absolutely nothing about child modeling. It is not a topic that interested me in the slightest. Having now written 18 articles on the topic, I am pleased to say that it has not actually been that painful at all.

I don’t fully agree with the argument that you must be passionate about your niche in order to succeed, smartpassiveincome niche site duel. Perhaps that is more down to my character; I enjoy researching and writing articles in general, which obviously helps a great deal.

In terms of research, I bought a couple of books and scoured the internet for all things child modeling. One thing that became clear is that there is absolutely no competition out there in terms of a hub website offering quality guidance on child modeling. I will definitely look to exploit this.

3. Marketing

I have tried a few strategies so far. I have closely followed Pat Flynn’s backlinking strategy (see &#;THE Backlinking Strategy That Works&#;), which appears to smartpassiveincome niche site duel got me plenty of backlinks (around as of today). I have commented on blogs. I have introduced myself at a couple of child modeling forums, which has attracted decent traffic, but nothing that will ever set the world alight. The key is definitely in my Google ranking, which has been stuck in the high teens for a couple of weeks now.

I am quite pleased with my ranking at this stage, smartpassiveincome niche site duel, as my site is well optimised for my chosen key phrase and the quality and depth of content is increasing week by week, smartpassiveincome niche site duel. Although my ranking has not moved considerably for a couple of weeks, I am not concerned. I fired off a quick email to Pat Flynn a while ago, and he assured me that he had exactly the same experience with his niche site, smartpassiveincome niche site duel. I think my patience bitcoin what is it made of pay off.

I also have a couple of additional strategies that I am either planning to employ or am currently experimenting with, which I will report back on in a later article.

4. Monetization

Perhaps confusingly, monetization is the least of my worries right now. I think too many would-be entrepreneurs are too concerned with earning a quick buck. At this point, income is not the most important factor – traffic is. If you have traffic, the income will follow, as long as you carry out an effective monetization strategy.

So for the time being, I am not paying much attention to monetization. Yes, I have Adsense on my website, but I have put little thought into placement. Once I start to attract a decent amount of traffic, I will look to develop my monetization strategy. I already have a few ideas, which I will reveal in a later article.

It doesn&#;t hurt to say this twice: don&#;t get too caught up in trying to monetize your smartpassiveincome niche site duel in the early days. The level of traffic won&#;t warrant the effort; you should be focusing your efforts on content and marketing.

What Next?

Simply put, rinse and repeat. I will continue to add three new articles every week and work on my marketing strategies. At this point I am not putting countless hours into the project – perhaps an hour a day, smartpassiveincome niche site duel. The start-up time taken was considerably more involved, but I think I am over that hill now.

As I have already stated, I am not concerned about my positioning at this stage. I am happy to bide my time, number of bitcoin miners 2022 remaining focused on the task at hand.
