What is Mentalism?

With the Other Mentalist is making his way to the winery, customers and winery employees alike have been asking questions like, "What is Mentalism?" and "Can mentalists really read minds?" These questions piqued my interest so I did some investigating; here's what I found:

Mentalism is a performing art that encompasses a series of acts and ‘feats’ performed by self-proclaimed Mentalists; all of which deal with the manipulation of the human psyche or the showcasing of one’s highly-developed mental abilities. For example, a mentalist may showcase their telepathic skills by projecting a thought into the mind of an audience member.

Mentalism’s roots run deep and can be traced directly back to Spiritualism and the spiritualists of the 18th Century. During this time, speaking with the dead and asking ghosts to do things like play a guitar or lift a table was popular entertainment. Having these parlor tricks performed in one’s home was a sensation, and before long, mediums and psychics were, well, everywhere.

Flash forward a bit to the 1960s and 70s and performers like Uri Geller were bending spoons with their minds...

There have been skeptics throughout the ages. In fact, the famed magician Harry Houdini used to work to expose phony mediums who preyed on those looking to communicate with their dead relatives. But Spiritualism is quite different than Mentalism, and mentalists have even gone on record as saying that they utilize a variety of “Cold Reading” techniques to read people and thus use the information that they gather to simulate psychic abilities.

So, to answer the question, “Is Mentalism fact or fiction?” I say, it depends. Ultimately you need to be the judge and take from Mentalism what you would like. I for one find that suspending disbelief is far more entertaining than not...

Prepare to be amazed; whether they are nothing more than parlor tricks or the result of an above-average understanding of the human psyche, acts of Mentalism are astonishing. Thus, I invite you to come and see for yourself. Join us on Friday, December 15th, when we welcome "The Other Mentalist," Tom Kennedy, to perform mesmerizing acts of Mentalism live at the winery.
